MixMaker Spotlight: From StumbleUpon to Mix, Meet Art!
We're excited to feature author, short fiction expert, and one of our favorite Mix curators, Art Kavanagh. From book reviews to reading lists to collections of short stories, you can catch him on Mix sharing his stories and other great reads. Check out our Q&A to learn why he collects and curates on Mix.
How would you describe Mix to a friend?
Mix is both a great way to find new things on the internet (tailored to the interests you’ve specified) and a way to direct attention to the sites, pages and stories that you believe deserve it.
What's your favorite thing about Mix?
For me, the best thing is the element of human curation. Web pages are mixed to particular themed Mixes and it’s possible to follow a Mix independently of the person who created it. (Of course, you can follow individuals too.)
How would you compare Mix to StumbleUpon?
StumbleUpon seems to work by pushing the pages with the most Likes to the top. Mix does something more complicated, taking into account your own personal interests and what people with similar tastes have liked. The result is that I can always find something that interests me and that I want to read.
Anything you'd like to add?
I love the look of the site: the fonts, the colour palate and the generously spaced grid. Visually, it’s a lot more inviting than Facebook, Pinterest or (dare I say it?), StumbleUpon. Obviously a lot of thought went into the look of the site.
